I am A. M. Lockett. I have had a challenging summer prior to the program as well as a challenging life, in general. This May I had a full hip replacement, this June I graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a double major: Politics and Sociology (summa cum laude), this July I had spinal fusion surgery and had to move out of campus housing by the end of July, this August we moved into a wonderful house which was totally God’s provision-all the while I am and have been raising my two grandsons, ages 12 and 9 since they were 5 and 2. I am a single grandmother of my minor grandsons, and was the single mother of four children, all now adults. I returned to college as a re-entry student in my late forties when I was laid off and had just taken custody of my two youngest grandsons. I completed my AA degree at my local community college in two years and thereafter transferred to UCSC where I completed my BAs in three years. I have taught and mentored my fellow students at both institutions.
I was raised a Christian, but did not have a personal relationship with God until my forties when I surrendered my life and will to Our Father. Through all of the above, it is God who has and is strengthening me and in whom I put all my trust. I spent the first half of my life expressing my will and following those who followed no one. I have been living the second half of my life with Jesus and have been having the best time of my life! This brings me to my educational philosophy: I believe that life is a learning experience and whether you succeed or fail, there is value in the experience. As a teacher, I hope to help students look at the experiences of their own lives and of others through a critical lens that will empower themselves as well as others in creating a better and more God-like world. I am thankful that I am being given a do-over, by the grace of God, to assist other students in their educational, social, emotional, and spiritual walk.
I hope to eventually pursue a Ph.D. My long-term goal is to become an online professor at the junior college and/or university level. In all my endeavors, I hope to someday abroad with my grandsons to teach, but I will seek the Will of My Father in Heaven first on this and all other life decisions.
